The best thing about retirement is that you have time to reinvent yourself and pursue your creativity. After attending numerous artist craft fairs and art galleries, Elizabeth Small decided to try her hand at making art dolls. With no formal training other than on-line tutorials on YouTube, she has taught herself how to use paper-clay for sculpting, acrylic paints, designing with fabric and assemblage. It is a challenging process to realize a vision and figure out how to make it a reality.
Each doll she creates is one-of-a-kind and has its own story. Some characters evolve easily while others take weeks to complete. There is never a shortage of subject matter or inspiration in designing a new doll and most ideas come from “everyday” people.
Costuming is by far her favorite part of creating each unique personality. Elizabeth enjoys designing each detailed outfit and embellishing it with bits of jewelry and trim. Most of the time, the materials guide her and help to reveal the doll as she creates. Elizabeth looks forward to exploring new techniques in doll designs and sharing her excitement of doll creations with others.
